Jesus said to his disciples:
"I have come to set the earth on fire,
and how I wish it were already blazing!
There is a baptism with which I must be baptized,
and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!
Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth?
No, I tell you, but rather division.
From now on a household of five will be divided,
three against two and two against three;
a father will be divided against his son
and a son against his father,
a mother against her daughter
and a daughter against her mother,
a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." (Lk 12:49-53)
My brothers and sisters,
This, too, is a chilling Gospel—chilling in its simplicity.
Jesus says: I have come to burn the minds, wills, and hearts of human people. To burn through you—your sin and your pride, your hardness of your heart, your self-dependence and your hypocrisy. To burn through you so that you are emptied of everything that makes no room for the totality of who I am, because I am infinite, and you cannot receive infinity until you have been emptied of the finite. You will know when you are emptied of the finite when your surrender to me has divided you from others, those who won’t surrender—a divide by the sword, which pierces your heart the way it pierced my mother’s, so that the thoughts of all hearts may be revealed. The ones who know unity are the ones who have given their all, and then there is nothing of them left, but me, who am Maker and Savior, Brother and Friend, King and High Priest.
